I believe that David Wallace’s actions spoke as loud as his
words. He went against the flow of a
normal commencement speech that most people give out. He explained that the human race is very self-centered
and that we as a whole care more about ourselves than anyone else, thus missing
out on the true meaning of life. Wallace
gave many examples on how are self-centeredness and hard wired thoughts, tend
to make people shut out any other ideas or possibility’s on life. Myself included have many times been in a
rush thinking, “me, me, me” and forget about the fact that there are other
people around that most likely have bigger problems than I do. He explains how these graduates don’t fully
understand the true meaning of the regular “day in and day out” work life and
that in fact it does become monotonous.
This is in fact true for myself because, when I’m not in school, I work
all the time, and I forget how boring the working life is. Go to bed early, wake up early, work all day,
come home and try to relax, not only to do it all over again the next day. We are all hard wired like this; we take for
granted the most obvious day to day things in life, when in reality we should
notice them the most. I think this was a
great speak, one I have read before, and actually quoted from without realizing
it. It made me try to change the way I think
from the self-centered mindset to one that is thoughtful and trying to be understanding
of other things that might be taking place.
