Susan J. Douglas and Pat Archbold’s articles are
very interesting to say. What both articles have in common is that both explain
how society views women and how it has changed over the years. In Archbold’s
article, his tone of voice doesn’t seem as hostile as Susan’s; his is more of a
complaining, whiny and pleading tone. As
for Susan she goes right into blaming the media, the expectations women are
held to, and the enlightened sexism. From what I have read Susan seems to be
letting out her frustration and annoyance about how ridiculous it is what the
media portrays as giving “true power” to women; body, appearance, pleasing men
and competing with other women. I have to agree the whole concept of
Enlightened Sexism is very ridiculous. Yes, she does partially blame men for
some of the reasons why women are objectified, but she attacks more the media. As
for Archbold, his article is more of explaining how no girl wants to be portrayed
as that “good girl, “ and that hot is more in than pretty. Also, coming from a
man’s point of view I’m quite surprised to know that there are some men out there
who prefer pretty over hot. Pat’s
definition of pretty is pure innocence, beauty, and intelligence. On the other
hand, hot is defined as leaving nothing to the imagination and basically not
having really high expectations for one self. I believe these two would have an
interesting dinner because of their views.
