The War on Poverty was introduced by Lyndon B. Johnson shortly after he was sworn into office. This was the medias name for his plan to ultimately end hunger and deprivation from America by creating more opportunity for people living in poverty to obtain an education and job training, and to develop community. To do this he signed the Economic Opportunity Act, which was later disbanded, that introduced several social programs. Some of the programs implemented are Job Corps, Volunteers in Service to America, Project Head start, and a few others and were administered by the Office of Economic Opportunity. After the the creation of these programs poverty rates dropped from 17.3% in 1964 to 11.1% in 1973. Since then the poverty rate has fluctuated. Whether or not we are winning or losing the War on Poverty is debatable.
