Gender Norms of the Media

In "Escape from Wonderland" by Deborah Ross, she explains how Disney creates a gender norm by subjecting to how these wonderful childhood characters are really showing children feminine and masculine qualities. For example Ross explains in Disney's The Little Mermaid how Ariel is never really satisfied in the movie, and if you have a bunch of girls watching, how must the girls watching her feel about it. Ross gives insight to what Disney is trying to portray to our little ones. I agree with her because the media will use anything they can, even if it is a children movie, to get the stereotypes of genders brainwashed into your heads. Movies, ad's, and commercials  all have gender norms in them. For example all romantic movies show the man chasing after the woman for her love; he does all the kind gestures and treats her like a princess, which leads women to think that every man they meet has to be just like the man in the movie they saw. Ever since the production of movies came about woman want to be swept off their feet by a cute guy who treats them like a princess, but that is just a movie with actors who are paid to do it, but woman love it so much they want it to be real, so men are entered into a gender norm that they have to be this romantic, humble, and kind man so they can please woman who want this fantasy. As for Noah Berlatsky's "'Twilight' vs. 'Hunger Games': Why Do So Many Grown-Ups Hate Bella?" he explains how these two major box office teen flicks have two different kinds of leading ladies. Bella who is more of the "girly" type compared to Katniss who is more of a hard hitting independent woman, Bella would never get in any violence without any rescue because she is not tough one in the series, she seeks love and creating happiness with the one she wants to spend the rest of her life with which is the ideal feminist. While Katniss is a fighter who will fight for what she loves. She stands on her own and doesn't need a man to be by her side showing the more anti-feminist movement. Katniss goes against what women should be while Bella sticks to the gender norm. Media can be very deceiving to society; they give us pretty painted pictures which we all fall for more and more every day. Gender norms are everywhere we go; we are just so used to seeing them due to the media.

  1. I 100% agree with you that Disney Movies have warped the mind of children especially girls on what a man is supposed to do to "win her heart". Too many times do I see and deal with females that just want too much out of a relationship. I'm ok with paying for the whole meal like 75% but women should have to split or even cover the bill every once in a while. I believe in an ideal relationship couples should work as a TEAM not one person always waiting hand n foot dragging the other one along in a golden chariot.

The once new girl power wave in which girls can kick ass and take names just as men can, in my eyes, has become a semi accepted social norm. Semi because I believe men are ok with doing things "manly" things like MMA and boxing partially because our generation grew up with shows like Power Puff Girls and Kim Possible where those divas kicked quality supreme ass. I believe it's when girls do things like try to become a "player" and have a male mentality when it comes to dating. Nobody likes getting played especially when it's supposed to be from some "damsel in distress figure" you're supposed to take off her feet.

  2. I completely agree with what Marissa and the authors are saying.
Media has set this perfect image of a relationship in young girls minds. Not only Disney movies but also other movies like The Notebook or The Vow for example. Movies like these show a man and a woman completely in love with hardly any problems and always ending with a “Happily Ever After”. Even being 19, I still wish that those movies could be reality, but reality is that nobody is that perfect. But a girl can dream, can’t she? But maybe that is just the problem, maybe these movies are setting the standards for these young women before they even know what they truly want themselves.

In the “’Twilight’ vs. ‘Hunger Games’: Why Do So Many Grown-Ups Hate Bella?” the author points out how not every female has to be completely feminine. Just like Katniss from the “Hunger Games”. Katniss is a very strong, independent woman that shows she doesn’t need a man to make her confident. But Bella from “Twilight” is the exact opposite. Throughout the whole series, Bella tries to win over her dream guy but pushing marriage and sex. When it comes to fight Bella would rather be hiding behind a strong protective man, whereas Katniss would be right along side the man showing that she could fight too. Being feminine doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a girly girl. Being feminine is showing that you have a voice and power just like a man does.

  3. I agree That disney movies have a lot of social stereo types in them especially when it comes to gender roles. Most of the female characters in Disney movies end up being damsels in distress for the male character to go save to prove that he loves her. Which is a good way to end a movie but it makes it look like girls just need to wait for a man to come along who will be in love with them at first sight. It also portrays the guy the princess falls in love with has money and charm well except for in aladdin who starts out as a theif. So Disney in my opinion Disney is pushing Thay girls shouldn't have to do anything except be pretty and nice to get the prince or their true love at the end which is untrue it should be a effort of both male and female that causes them to come together and it shouldn't have to be love at first sight to be true love. To me when I look at some of the Disney characters they just dont portray a realistic view from the real world. In the real world girls aren't these damsels needing to be saved or who are just waiting for a prince they're out in the world searching for someone and working to get to that happy ending that everyone wants so I hope Disney will one day try to portray the roles of men and women differently because to me the damsel in distress is getting old I would like to see more Kim possible stuff in the future where the female character is portrayed in a better light then just a damsel in distress.
